Visual arts building
The original Arts and Communication Center at Phillips Academy was designed in the 1960s by architect Ben Thompson as a glass and concrete, two-story classroom building of 32,000 square feet. CBT’s design challenge was to update the Center with current technology and fashion the building around the Academy’s desire to teach inspired visual literacy and expression, while preserving the building’s early Modern design principles.
The entire interior was redesigned to meet present-day studio needs and artist safety concerns. Taking advantage of the abundant northern and southern light, studios were specially designed for two-dimensional work, painting, photography, woodworking, and sculpture. Processed ventilation was incorporated to abate health hazards inherent in the use of art materials and tools, such as paints and woodworking and welding equipment. A computer lab with full media applications and a video production studio enabled the Academy to offer a new curriculum in electronic imaging and film. Renewal of an existing auditorium and campus/community function rooms further revitalized the Center.
As a means of increasing student activity at the center, CBT seized the opportunity to transform the adjacent courtyard space into a lively exterior room for performance art, giving new definition to the Center’s placement and function as a campus gateway and destination.
