The Shaw’s Market at the Prudential Center, designed by CBT and sited at the corner of Huntington and Exeter Streets in Boston’s Back Bay, brings a much needed amenity to the community living and working in the area. It offers twice the area of the market it replaced, located on the other side of the Prudential Center complex.
Built over a highway and railroad lines and within a mixed-use office and residential area, the design for the new market fits well into the urban plan for the Back Bay and Prudential Center. The building infills a current windswept plaza and activates the street by providing a pleasant and more typical streetscape to the surrounding community. The loading dock is discretely located so that all truck movement and delivery will occur off street in an enclosed area to minimize disruption to the adjacent residences. Because many of the surrounding residences and office buildings overlook the roof of the market, a lush landscape garden was built to provide residents with a private outside community space and landscaped patios enhance the view. A portion of the roof includes attractive pavement and a grove of deciduous trees.
