Commemorating 50 Years

This year the firm rounded corners of firmwide and cultural success revealing new opportunities for us to grow, innovative, and further shape and impact the built environment. Just when we thought we’d reached new heights of design, community engagement, and cultural enrichment, 2017 arrived – as well as the firm’s celebratory milestone of 50 years in practice.

Over the course of the year CBT the firm came together for a series of celebratory gatherings that prompted us to not only reflect on the firm’s 50 years of practice but also look ahead to what’s next.  From fireside chats with Charles and Richard to the creation of a gallery exhibit chronicling 50 years of CBT history, to the launch of our brand new website, 2017 was full of celebration.

It was truly a remarkable year for our firm and our design, however, what really made this year special was the people it brought together. Here are a few of our favorite moments together as a firm in 2017.

Inspiring Innovation with HUBweek
For the third year running, CBT teamed up with Boston’s best and brightest to bring design insight and inspiration to the City’s annual innovation festival, this year to transform City Hall Plaza into their first-ever centralized festival site. Featuring 72 shipping containers, 6 geodesic domes, 150 events, 130 art installations, we’re proud to have helped bring together Boston’s leaders in arts, science and technology for the greater good and are already in the planning stages for 2018!

CBT Cares Launch
As a testament to the firm’s longstanding commitment to community service, our Associates group collaborated with firm leaders to design and launch our new annual community service initiative called CBT Cares.  The group put out an open call to all CBTers to share the causes and charities they cared most about. Based on what they heard, this dedicated group coordinated the launch of a firm-sponsored community service program that spanned the first two weeks of December at a series of different location organizations including: The Pine Street Inn, Greater Boston Food Bank, Blueprints of Love, Rosie’s Place, Cradles to Crayons and Habitat for Humanity.

Inaugural Maurice F. Childs Memorial Lecture
In November 2017, CBT was proud to celebrate the launch of the inaugural Maurice F. Childs Endowed Lectureship series in memory of CBT founder, Maury Childs. This annual lecture at the Boston Architectural College (BAC) is designed to carry on Maury’s passion for mentoring, teaching and inspiring others. We were proud to welcome Thom Mayne, a Pritzker Prize-winning architect and American Institute of Architects (AIA) Gold Medalist, as the inaugural speaker.

A Year of 50
Thanks to the teamwork of our nearly 230 talented designers, creatives and thought leaders, we were proud to be recognized with two top tier-awards as a firm at the end of the year. First, we ranked 35th nationwide in Architect Magazine’s Top 50 Firms in Design. Second, we were named one of 50 of Boston’s most innovative companies in BostonInno’s 50 on Fire awards

Here’s to 2018 and the start of our next 50 years!
