Atlantic Wharf is located on Fort Point Channel and for 100 years it contained warehouses for seafaring activity. As the flagship project for the next downtown Boston neighborhood slated for growth, the mixed-use building contains approximately one million square feet of space including residential, ground-level retail space, and 23 stories of office space with six stories of below grade parking, that will bring urban activity directly to the water's edge.
The base of the new development is a series of restored and renovated historic structures that preserve the texture of this historic site. The seven-story limestone Peabody building will be completely renovated for residential use and ground floor retail. The tower's highly detailed maritime expression responds to the complex nature of its immediate context. Its light translucent glass screenwall rises up with a canted top designed to resemble a sail introducing a contemporary aesthetic that contrasts with the area's industrial past. A glass form rises at the south west corner of the building marking the office entry and recalling the industrial chimneys of the area while a dramatic, glass-enclosed atrium at the tower's base spans the original 19th-century street pattern and creates a grand entry to the offices. The ground floor site plan includes a landscaped waterfront plaza on the harborwalk fronting Fort Point Channel.
