The renovation of one of Boston’s busiest office lobbies creates a fresh workplace identity for this 1960’s iconic building. Originally constructed in 1965, the 50-story office tower is part of a 27-acre large-scale mixed-use complex. The two-sided lobby entry connects to the retail arcade and tapers back to three banks of elevators containing 27 low-, mid-, and high-rise elevator cabs. This renovation includes redesigned entry storefront and lobby doors; reconfiguration of the interior lobby walls, floors, and ceiling; custom and hand-selected finishes; and revisions to the lighting in the lobby and retail arcade. In addition to the thousands of workers that pass through everyday, the lobby serves as the only entrance to the building’s observation deck and signature restaurant. The project was phased to keep the tower open for tenant and visitor access during the seven month renovation. The new design brings a fresh, light and aesthetically clean direction to the originally dark lobby. Classic stone, rich wood, crisp lines and stainless accents relate to the building’s 1960’s modern aesthetic and present a timeless contemporary image. The linen fold chevron pattern of the wood wall, columns, entry glass, and custom sconces creates a clever design detail which unifies these many elements and enhances the 3-dimentional expression of these materials.
