Robert Brown Presented at the NACUBO 2010 Annual Meeting
July 2010
On July 25, Robert Brown presented “Promoting and Achieving Environmental Stewardship at Your Institution” at the NACUBO 2010 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA. Presenting with Robert was F. Robert Huth, Jr., executive vice president of Middlebury College, and Gregory Haselden and Randy Moore from Erskine College
This session explored two distinctly different approaches to improving campus environmental sustainability. With a historical emphasis on environmental stewardship, Middlebury College used both its students and its master plan process to build consensus across the institution and make significant progress on its carbon neutrality objectives. The master plan supports the institution’s goals for carbon neutrality by 2016 by promoting smart campus growth, energy efficiency, attention to the natural environment, and stronger campus connections. The goal of the strategic planning process was to foster more vibrant communities and a more seamless connection with the school’s academic programs and commitment to sustainability. Every stage was guided by detailed financial projections that helped inform discussions of resource allocation and prioritization. As part of its master plan, CBT recently completed two projects for the College that are being nationally recognized for their innovative sustainable strategies.
Erskine College received a presidential directive to improve environmental sustainability efforts, making significant progress over the last two years as it has implemented a comprehensive sustainability program.
