Recognizing a need for additional campus housing and community space, Champlain College sought a meaningful addition to its residential offerings, while striving to achieve the balance of priorities among functional, aesthetic, and social components. To draw Champlain students to live near the campus core, the design team was challenged to create contextually sensitive and sustainable residential quad program that fit the neighborhood fabric while reinforcing a strong campus identity through the creation of new campus gathering spaces and providing the campus with much-needed beds.

The 370-bed residential quad project includes three new residence halls: Juniper, Valcour and Butler. Each residence hall is designed to be sustainable and contextually sensitive to both the external-facing historic neighborhood and the internal contemporary nature of the campus.  Adding to the planned transformation from a commuter-focused school to a residential campus, the new residential quad provides an engaging common green space, pedestrian spine/promenade, and landscaped common community areas.
