Columbus Center is a 1.4 million-square-foot, mixed-use project that spans the Massachusetts Turnpike and transforms four bridges into vital city streets. To be built in the air rights above a railroad and interstate highway, Columbus Center was made possible in 1994 when the Turnpike Authority offered parcels of “air rights” over the highway for lease to private developers. Its design set a precedent for using high-quality architecture to reunite parts of Boston that had been separated when, in the 1950s, the Turnpike and Amtrak right-of-way were carved 120 feet wide across the existing pattern of streets.
