Stories

The Smith, the first of two paired, multifamily residences in the heart of Boston's historic South End, is a human-centered haven, inside and out. Providing both architectural and interior design services, CBT's design is inspired by the neighborhood's culture, industrial arts history and 19th-century architecture. This eleven-story, 300-unit mixed-use/maker-focused residence resonates welcome and wellness at many scales, from green spaces at street- and sky-level to art-filled communal living rooms and hand-crafted interior elements that enliven through texture, pattern, weld, and weave.

Brimming with art, color, and custom pieces, the Smith blends maker energy with home. A curated mixed-media art program brings original work—much by local artists—to each floor, reminders of the infinite scope of human expression. Through the first-floor and eleventh-floor amenity areas, custom- and hand-crafted metalwork, leatherwork, and woodwork evoke the maker spirit, weaving together the areas' aesthetic, from hand-hewn farm tables to black metal screens and sculptural fiber art. Both amenity levels include nooks and crannies where residents can hunker down—whether with knitting, watercolor—or spreadsheets. Offering a variety of work-from-home spaces, the business center offers private heads-down workspaces, while work-booths and the cyber-lounge can host individuals and small collaborations.

A wellness leader, the Smith is Fitwel's—the world’s leading certification system for healthful buildings—first project to achieve Multifamily Residential v2.1 certification and the residence’s spaces and supports for wellness are integral aspects. Design supporting mental and social health abound, including access to the lush courtyard, the many social spaces, rooftop pool, fitness/yoga/spin facilities, enhanced air quality, daylight, views, and easy access to neighborhood transit and retail.
