Educating students from more than thirty communities on Boston's North Shore for over 155 years, St. Mary's is a 500-student college preparatory school, teaching grades 6 through 12. As a result of the campus master plan developed by CBT, a new Gateway and STEM Center at St. Mary's reflects the school's commitment to the sciences and project-based learning.

The design of the 30,000-square-foot addition knits three separate campus buildings together to form a single interconnected school, creating a distinctive presence along a central city street. The new Center also establishes a single point of entry, enhancing the security of the school community. With learning environments like science labs and flexible maker spaces, the Gateway and STEM Center connects existing resource centers and core curriculum classrooms to encourage multidisciplinary explorations and 21st-century techniques of problem-solving.

The Center includes three STEM labs, a maker space, multiple science labs, and an open, first-floor learning commons/gathering space for all students. It also houses a guidance suite with a college preparatory program that helps students apply for college and an enlarged computer lab for project-based learning. The siting of the Center also shapes a new outdoor green space and seating area for al fresco study breaks.
