When VHB set out to move from their industrial warehouse office to a modern 21st century building, they knew they wanted to bring the charm of Richmond with them, lending way to a concept grounded in renewed history. The design seamlessly bridges the city’s rich history with a forward-looking, contemporary vision. Located on a site that once served as a vital turning basin along a former trade route, the space pays homage to its roots through thoughtful architectural storytelling. A central ceiling installation inspired by the iconic batteau boat preserves the legacy of the area's river commerce, transforming heritage into a sculptural centerpiece.
Drawing from the surrounding neighborhood, the design integrates local character in a modernized palette. Patterns seen throughout the city—cobblestone streets, ironwork, and brick—are reinterpreted in finishes and textures, bringing the outside in. A curated palette of colors nods to the region’s historical tones, while wall coverings evoke nearby mountain landscapes, grounding the workspace. This palette is supported by sustainable, tactile materials: upholstery crafted from natural fibers such as wool, linen, and cotton lends warmth and comfort while aligning with the firm’s commitment to environmentally responsible design.
The office offers employees an adaptable, open-concept space that fosters creativity, inclusivity, and innovation. The free address layout encourages movement and choice, offering employees equity in how and where they work.
Every design element—whether structural or decorative—echoes the spirit of Richmond. From the cobblestone-inspired details to the intentional use of renewable materials, the VHB Richmond office tells a story of transformation. By honoring the past while embracing modern needs, the space becomes more than an office—it becomes a dynamic expression of community, sustainability, and forward-thinking design.
