The Sky Garden is a vertical garden neighborhood in the sky, a pair of high-end residential twin towers located in Taiwan. The towers are between two major open spaces -- a grand public park to the east and an urban park greenway and plaza to the west -- that connect the shopping district and cultural/civic district to the site. The Zhongkai Sheshan Villas is a gated community of 80 contemporary homes located near bucolic Sheshan Mountain, approximately 45 minutes southwest of downtown Shanghai. The owners of this residence wished to create a second home in the mountains of western Massachusetts where they could vacation with their two grown children. The rural environment and the use of the house as a vacation “cottage” suggested simple geometric shapes for its expression. The form and arrangement of spaces within the home take advantage of sunlight and views of the surrounding moutnains and achieve a logical circulation flow with appropriate separation of public and private spaces. Located in a rural area of southeastern Massachusetts, this house is sited to take advantage of views to a flanking river that meanders along its northern border. The plan of the house responds to the shifting direction of the river with spaces shifting to orient to the differing views. The composition of the house is expressed as a series of small-connected structures, which help reduce the scale of the house and recall indigenous farm buildings prevalent in the area. Read More
